If you've noticed that Xbox Live has had some periodic moments of down time, well it's all due to a hacker group calling themselves the New World Hackers or the NWH. These guys have done more than just hack the Xbox servers, they've also gone after several websites in the past and they're not claiming that they could wipe out Xbox Live permanently.
They've also shut down a couple of Isis website (Good) and more than a few political leaders web pages recently, but their sights have turned to wiping Xbox Live from the face of the earth. According to one of the members of this hacking group who spoke with Newsweek, this recent attack was just their way of protesting against one of the biggest corporations in America and their shotty security team.
“Well, didn't even take as long as I thought. We attacked Xbox to protest. Major companies like this have massive servers but no real protection. We want Xbox to update the protection they have, which isn't much”
This being a quote from Newsweek it sounds like they aren't just protesting but showing the holes in Microsoft security which puts us all at risk. Considering how much money actually flows through the platform Xbox Live should beef up their security in this regard to safeguard it's users. This may just be a groups way of protesting major corporations like a New World version of Tyler Durden's, Project Mayhem, but it does at the very least show the company's holes in their security.
They don't seem all bad in my opinion if they're going after more than just a service that millions of people enjoy. Something like this could just be the beginning of something bigger, and with Anonymous being out of the news recently, it's nice to see that there are still groups out there who use their hacking skills for the good of us all. Maybe, just maybe they aren't the bad guys that the media will spin them to be.
