The Superhuman Genes Could Be Manufactured Soon, Says Big Pharma, But At What Cost?
Superhuman... it sounds too good to be true, but there are humans with extraordinary features about them that make them Superhuman. There are people around the world with bones that don't break, or that don't feel pain on any level. Some have a metabolism that far outweighs anything they could ever eat, or even just being able to pack on astronomical amounts of muscle almost effortlessly. Being able to withstand electrical currents that would kill
most any man would be nice. I can think of many occasions where these people exist, and Big Pharma wants their DNA for the betterment of mankind and the billions of dollars it will make them.
Sclerosteosis is a condition that is very rare. Its condition, is that it makes your bones very dense. NASA picked up on a drug that a pharmaceutical company was working on using this condition to help osteoporosis patients, and have started trials in space with it to keep up on the bone degradation that happens while astronauts are in space. So far their results look promising but time will tell.
A person that doesn't feel pain has contributed their DNA so they can make better painkillers, someone whom their body rejects cholesterol has contributed their DNA to help people reduce their ever raising levels.
But at what cost will it be to the consumer when and if these things ever become present? NASA predicts that their sclerosteosis pill they have been working with in space, if successful, will be at least a $2 billion dollar a year industry just to them, let alone every other person on the planet. What will a prescription cost for a person trying to get help for osteoporosis? What about the new painkillers genetically modified from the DNA of a donor, what will that cost to me and you? Only time will tell what will happen or even if they ever become available.
Side Note: I still can't take James Woods seriously after that Family Guy Episode.
