Software Company Selling Weaponized Spyware and Malware to Governments Around the World Gets Hacked
Who is the Hacking Team and why do we care you might ask? The Hacking Team is a group that employs over 40 workers and work upon a global scale, They sell weaponized spyware and malware to governments around the world. They are paid to help governments spy on their citizens, and now what appears to be a long line of invoices and even a customer list, 400 Gigabytes of data all together, have been exposed and published via torrent by their own hacked twitter account.
According to the files in the torrent, which is said to have a virus in it by the company itself, the company does business with Egypt, Ethiopia, Morocco, Nigeria, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Honduras, Mexico, Panama, United States, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Vietnam, Australia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Luxemburg, Poland, Spain, Switzerland, Bahrain, Oman, Saudi Arabia, UAE, plus while being listed as “Not officially supported” are still listed as customers Russia and Sudan. There may be more, and this company says they don't do business with Sudan but they are listed as a customer which may bring them into some hot water if it can be proven. The company also maintains that they do not do business with oppressive governments.
Many people among the company have had their passwords revealed to the public, the sites indexed include social media (Live, Facebook, LinkedIn), financial (banks, Paypal), and network related (routers with default credentials), some clients have had their passwords revealed, as well as contracts and configurations.
This is a developing story, and I'm sure there will be more information released as the investigation goes on.
