Facebook facial recognition will soon be able to tag you without seeing your face. What a double edged sword that some will love because it makes it very easy to tag all your friends, and some will hate because Facebook knows too much about them and they don't want to be tagged in pictures on the internet.
Facebook's AI Lab has put together an algorithm and looks for other physical clues when you are not showing your face. Its already been tested with almost 40,000 pictures from Flickr, the pictures show some people's faces but many others had their faces turned away, the system was able to recognize faces with an 83% accuracy, Congratulations Facebook, you have made some dreams come true and some nightmares a reality.
It is the next step in facial recognition though of course, after its already stunning ability to recognize faces as it does, to recognize the rest of the body and features with stunning precision may lead to advancements in security as well. Facebook is also pushing Facebook Moments onto its users as well, which is a photo-sharing service that revolves around facebook's power to recognize you and your friends. The app scans your phone for photos and allows you to easily share them with your friends, at least the ones the app recognizes in your images.
It is extreme, to say the least, to have such powerful identity recognition protocols on a social networking site, but Facebook doesn't seem to care about that, they want ease of use so everyone can tag anyone with less trouble than they are having now and they think this algorithm just might do the trick. Its a little creepy, a little freaky, and people trying to hide from the internet wont be able to hide much longer. This may soon be a part of everyday life and more and more will people implement its use.
