Super Mario has just become self aware with programming that gives him artificial intelligence. With the world of artificial intelligence becoming more common place it comes as no surprise that German Univeristy of Tübingen researchers have made Mario aware of himself. None of the responses from Mario are scripted and you can ask him questions about his environment and even how he is feeling.
Mario is taught and influenced through the the researchers programming, when commanded to jump on a Goomba Mario will give you a response if asked, but mostly internalizes how he feels about it. Making him more than just a parrot that you can influence a response from. Mario will also explore the world around him, and has been programmed to feel hunger and an variety of other emotions. If he's curious he'll start exploring, if he feels hungry Mario will begin to collect coins until he is satisfied.
However Mario isn't just stuck in one frame of mind. He can adapt to his environment and even learn from his experiences. When Mario is first asked “What do you know about Goomba” before having any interaction with them, he will say “I do not know anything about it”. But then after Mario encounters one for the first time, and asked the same question again he responded with “If I jump on Goomba then it maybe dies”
A small step for mankind in the development of artificial intelligence and a big jump for the world famous plumber. This opens up a whole new world of possibility when it comes to gaming, and could reshape the way we play video games by bringing a whole new world of interactions that were once impossible. This technology is still just a prototype for now, but very soon the concept will be available to the public.
