From the company that brought us NAO, the almost 2 foot robot that walks around and interacts with the world around it. Aldebaran and Softbank Mobile releases “Pepper”, the “robot with a heart”. Designed to be a companion of sorts,
Pepper wont clean or wash up the house, but Pepper is there to make you happy. That’s right a smart robot that learns your facial expressions and can recognize your moods and act accordingly to make your day bright. Every robot acts as if it is alive, and has simulated emotions that it can express depending on how it is treated.
Pepper sold out 1000 units in 60 seconds of release, with 1000 units promised by the company every month to be created. Currently only available in Japan, to the hard working American it will cost roughly $1700 USD base price, they also want you to add 3 years service contract with the company and to take out insurance through the company which can be payed monthly.
Aldebaran also has another robot in development, “Romeo”. Romeo is the bigger brother of NAO, made to be a personal assistant and companion, he has a diary to keep your appointments and will tell you of any conflicts in your schedule. And he detects if you are tired or overtaxed and suggests that you rest and will even wake you up. Sounds like the best assistant a person could have.
Although it is very expensive to own your very own Pepper robot, it can be fun for the whole family as it sets its personality based on interactions around it, it memorizes what you like and your facial features from emotions that you give to it. It has “value of life” in that it will avoid things that will harm it and will tell you if something you suggest will break it. An awesome robot nonetheless and lets hope there are more to come!
