Artificial Intelligence is just over the horizon and it's developers are hoping that it will benefit mankind in every aspect from self driving cars, to wiping out world hunger, and even eviscerating disease. Their expectancy is that this new technology will shape and change the face of our planet as we know it. However there are those like Stephen Hawking who are warning them about the dangers of Rampant AI that only answers to it's self and not it's creators.
So, what do the scientist do?
They signed a letter....How nice.
This letter was a pledge that guaranteed artificial intelligence would benefit mankind and to avoid the potential trauma that rampant AI could cause. The letter that was drafted by the Future of Life Institute was written shortly after Hawking's address that stated AI could “supersede” humans who are unfortunately constricted by our slow biological evolution.
Meaning that there is a good chance that our engineering is going to get smarter than us and cause some type of Terminator style Judgment Day right?
Well, if Professor Hawking is right, that actually might not be too far off from what could happen saying, “It would take off on it's own, and re-design itself at an ever increasing rate”.
However there are some benefits to the new artificial intelligence application that could mean AI would place an end to “smart systems” putting humans out of work. When scientists and researchers actually implement the technology into our infrastructure, there will restraints in place that will limit any damage that could result of this “hypothetical” system break down.
Hypothetically...
Either way this is coming. The institute claims there is now a “broad consensus” that research involving artificial intelligence is making a great amount of progress and will soon have a huge impact on society. Let's just hope they don't mean the “Skynet has become self aware” type of impact.
