The movie that scared us all out of the water is back to do it again!
It's been 40 years since its release and it has returned to select theaters across the nation. Released on June 20th 1979, the motion picture had astounding success at the box office then rising to top the charts as the number 1 movie in America for 14 straight weeks. Directed by Steven Spielberg, a rather untested director, Jaws was his first in a long line of cinematic succes.
Starring Roy Scheider (Joseph from Iron Cross) as Brody, Richard Dreyfuss (Dr. Leo Marvin from What About Bob?) as Hooper, and Robert Shaw (General Marenkov from Avalanche Express) as Quint. Brody being the Police Chief of the small island community of Amity, closes the beaches after a series of shark attacks and sets out to kill the gigantic great white so the people can safely go back in the water off the beaches of Amity Island.
The film had tons of problems being made from the mechanical shark used for the shark prop not working, the fake limbs malfunctioning, the weather not right to film, to getting all the extras on the beach for the
panic scenes. However in the end the film was nominated for four Academy Awards including Best Picture, Best Music, Original Dramatic Score, Best Film Editing, and Best Sound and won Oscars for Best Music, Best Film Editing, and Best Sound in 1976. Jaws was also nominated in 1976 for four Golden Globes winning one of them, they are Best Director- Motion Picture, Best Screenplay- Motion Picture, Best Motion Picture- Drama, and winning Best Original Score- Motion Picture. For such an awesome movie it won many more awards apart from the ones mentioned.
Widely considered to be one of the first summer blockbusters and responsible for the creation of shark week, Jaws stands the test of time and continues to scare us out of the water (and for the irrational their pools), even though we know that “Bruce”(which is what they nicknamed the mechanical shark used to depict Jaws) isn’t really out there. One of the greatest movies of all time, it takes what we don’t know and cant see and exaggerates it to the extreme. Congratulations Steven Spielberg on making such a grand movie that still scares the hell out of us.
